Overview
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) needed an engaging way to highlight the accomplishments of its Winter 2024 Ancillary Structures Program. The objective was to transform the program's annual newsletter into a two-minute animated presentation that summarized key milestones and achievements while remaining consistent with MDOT's established brand standards.
The Challenge
The project required presenting a large amount of technical information in a format that was engaging, easy to understand, and accessible to a broad audience. It also needed to be easily updated by the MDOT team after delivery, making long-term usability just as important as the visual design.
Design Approach
I designed the animation entirely in Microsoft PowerPoint to give the client a solution they could easily maintain and edit without specialized animation software. Using PowerPoint's animation capabilities, I combined motion, visual hierarchy, icons, and clean layouts to guide viewers through the program's accomplishments while maintaining consistency with MDOT's branding and accessibility standards.
The Solution
The final deliverable was a two-minute animated presentation that summarized the Ancillary Structures Program's achievements and was published on MDOT's YouTube channel. By designing the animation in PowerPoint, I provided the team with a polished communication piece that could also be updated for future newsletters as the program evolved.
Outcome
The animation was well received by the client and introduced the team to new ways of using PowerPoint as a communication tool beyond traditional presentations. The project demonstrated how thoughtful design and animation can simplify technical information while delivering a flexible, sustainable solution that the client could continue using independently.
